Creating an Educational Music Video with Paascalino Schaller
Brief Description
Over 3 lessons students work together to tell an important story through writing lyrics, creating a song and music video (including a behind the scenes documentary of the process). The song/music video will be the collaborative outcome of all the students talents, skills and ideas. The music video aims to capture and communicate their learning about the subject which in turn can be used to start discussions and encourage positive behaviour change.
Objectives
Students develop confidence to creatively communicate their ideas
Students pick a role for the project that relates to their passions and interests
Roles: Lyricists, Musicians, Dancers, Prop creators, Filmer,
Develop ideas for a song - Lyricists write lyrics that tell the story
Record vocals rapping and singing - Musician are recorded singing/rapping lyrics
Create a dance choreography for music video
Develop ideas for a music video, plan shot types
Create props and/or costumes for the video,
Shoot a music video
Learn the basics of using visual and audio recording equipment.
Students share their music videos with their friends, family and wider community

Music Video Education

This music video project will be completed over 3 sessions.
Prior to lesson 1:
Learn about the subject matter and brainstorm important facts that they would like to communicate in the music video
Lesson 1 - Introduction to Music Video Education
- Getting started (15mins)

Tell students that they are going to create a song/music video to communicate what they have learned to their friends, family and community
Show 3 examples of MVE music videos that have been created in the past
Students discuss what they think the different roles needed for creating a song and music video are.
Talk about the different roles that students can choose from for this MVE project and what they will be doing in those roles.
Role Options: Lyricists (storytellers), Musicians, Singers, Rappers, Dancers, Prop creator, Filmer, production managers
Students select their role they would like to do in the MVE project
Students decided on the key ideas they would like to communicate
1. Minimise single use plastic 2. Recycling or 3. Reduce Food waste
Listen to a selection of instrumentals - student vote on which type of instrumental they would like to use for their song.
Students break into their selected groups and start working on their area of the MVE project.
Group work (30mins)
Lyricist & Musicians
Brainstorm information they would like to add to their song
Lyricist and musicians work together to write lyrics and rhymes that communicate the information
If possible write all lyrics onto a google doc and share with paasca@gmail.com
Dancers
Come up with a set of new and old dance moves that will support communicating their story start testing ideas, practicing move and coming up with Choreography
What kinds of move can we create that will communicate our ideas?
What would the recycle look like if it was a dance move?
Prop creators
Create a list of props or costumes they would like to see in the music video
Decide on what material they will need
Think about colour, what do the different colour represent in the video
What kind of signs would they like to create
Filmers
Take care of the camera and teach each other what you learn
Have turns operating the camera
Start and stop recording
Film steady shots using tripod
Get used to using the camera explore different angles and lighting
Film the different groups working on their project
Interview students and ask them what they are working
Film students practicing their ideas
End of lesson reflection (15mins)
Come back together and share what you decided to do in your group and what you have created
What did you learn? What did you enjoy? What challenged you?
Prior to lesson 2:
Lyricist have completed all their lyrics and supported musicians to sing and rap their parts confidently along with the instrumental
Musicians have practiced singing and rapping their parts with the lyrics and know them off by heart, ready to record.
Dancers know their dance off by heart and are ready to start refining their moves with the lyrics in mind
Prop creator have a list of probs they would like to create and what materials they need to create them
Filmmers have created a 6 shot storyboard with lyrics in mind
Lesson 2
- Recording song and preparing for filming day

Have the class share how their preparation for the coming lesson has gone

Break into group and continue preparing for music video shot
Group work (30mins)
Musicians recording their vocal parts
Learn about singing and rapping into a mic
Correct distance and technique to get good results
Continue repeating takes until happy

Dancers
Dancers continue practice their parts
Thinking about conviction and attitude
Is everyone in time with the beat
What dance moves are particularly hard and who can do them well?
Teach the complicated moves slowly then speed them up
Prop creators
Continue to create props from the list or costumes for the music video
Do you want to have key lyrics in the video as signs to communicate main ideas?
Organise who will bring in certain props for shot day
Filmers

Dancers know their dance off by heart and are ready to be filmed
All Props are finished and ready to be used for the music video
Filmers have created 6 shot list storyboard with lyrics in mind and have planned where they want to film the music video.

Go to the different location
Prop creators prepare the performers
One student calls - “Cameras rolling, play playback, action”
Camera operator set up the camera start filming “on cameras rolling”
Soundy needs to start music on “play back”
Dancers and musicians perform with props and costumes when “action” is called
Lighting needs to be set up if scene is dark
Do multiple takes until we are happy with take
End of lesson reflection (15mins)
Watch footage and look for best clips
Teachers start editing the footage with the students if there is time
